Firmware is the operating system on electronic tools that allow the tool to work optimally. Firmware can be found on devices like remote controls, calculators, wireless network devices, modems, etc.. Even high-tech devices such as cellphones, digital cameras and even the mainboard also has firmware that allows them to run the main function.

There is no definite boundary between the firmware with software, but the difference was the firmware is at a low level positions that deal directly with the hardware, sometimes software to detect it as a part of hardware.  While the software will be in the high-level positions only.

Firmware was first in use by Ascher Opler in Datamation article, in 1967. After that the words often used to denote the firmware ROM-resident, including BIOS, Bootstrap loaders.

so in essence there is no single electronic device that has no firmware. We see an example of digital TV. When we turn on the digital TV change of electric current into the Visual appearance is an electronic circuit which is a work of joint multiple ICs and other devices. But on TV FIX firmware is firmware that can not be updated.

At present many of the devices already allows the user should manually update the firmware, see for example the mainboard, wireless access point, mobile phones, portable musicplayer. Some devices allow the user above the proficient to update the firmware, and vendors also provide firmware updates for their products. Even in some existing devices that allows others to develop the firmware for their products Chip. like for example Wireless Access Point Linksys with DDWRT firmware.
